The cheetah is the fastest land animal on Earth, reaching speeds of 60 to 70 miles per hour (97 to 113 kilometers per hour) in short, explosive sprints. With its lightweight body and powerful legs, the cheetah is built for speed. Let’s explore what makes this animal such an amazing sprinter!

What Makes the Cheetah Special?

  • Built for Speed

Cheetahs have long, slim bodies and lightweight skeletons, which allow them to move quickly. They also have large nostrils, lungs, and heart to take in more oxygen, helping them breathe faster and keep up with the energy needed to run.

  • Sprinters, Not Marathon Runners

Although cheetahs can reach incredible speeds, they can only keep it up for about 20 to 30 seconds before they need to rest. After a quick sprint, they need to catch their breath, just like we do after a fast run.

  • Daytime Hunters

Cheetahs prefer to hunt during the day to avoid competition with other predators, like lions and leopards, who are more active at night. This gives them a better chance to find food without having to fight for it.

  • Eyesight and Stealth

With excellent eyesight, cheetahs can spot their prey from a long distance. They use their keen vision to pick out a target, then sneak up slowly and quietly until they’re close enough to sprint. Their spotted coats help them blend into the tall grasses, making them nearly invisible to unsuspecting prey.

Think about this...

Why might it be important for cheetahs to blend into their environment?
