Algebra is like a puzzle. It’s a branch of mathematics where we use symbols, letters, and numbers to solve problems and figure out unknowns.

Think of it as a way to organize and solve problems logically. You’ve probably already seen algebra without even realizing it! For example, let's say you have 10 carrots and give away a handful to a friend. Now, you have 7 carrots left. What if you wanted to figure out how many carrots you gave away? You can think of this as solving for x in 10 - x = 7. The answer? You gave away 3 carrots! Algebra helps us find unknown values by using what we already know.

Key Features of Algebra

  • Variables

    These are symbols, including letters like x or y, that stand for unknown values. For example: in the equation 3 + x = 7, x represents an unknown value. Some number, plus 3 equals 7. So in this example, x is the variable.

  • Expressions

    An expression is a math phrase, like 2x + 5. It does NOT have an equal sign. This is a way to show a relationship between quantities without solving right away. For example, if you earn $5 for every hour you work, the expression 5h shows how much money you’d make in h hours.

  • Equations

    An equation is like a math sentence, such as 2x + 5 = 15, and will ALWAYS have an equal sign. You can think of them like roadmaps that guide us to the solution of a problem. Understanding equations helps us solve real-life problems such as budgeting and even predicting the outcomes of science experiments.

  • Operations

    Algebra uses the same math operations you already know: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The difference is that now, we’re often solving for a missing piece.

Where Do We Use Algebra?

Have you ever been in math class and asked the question, "when will I ever use this in relal life?" Well in the case of Algebra, the answer, is all the time.There are many misconceptions about the use of Algebra in day to day life.

  • Budgeting: Balancing your income and expenses often involves creating equations. For example, let's say you earn $100 per week. After paying your bills, you only have $20 left to save each week. You’re saving up for a trip that costs $200. How many weeks will it take you to save enough money for the trip? We can say 20w=200,. Solve for w, 10 weeks!

  • Shopping: Figuring out discounts and sale prices requires solving percentage problems. For instance, if an item costs $40 and is on sale for 25% off, algebra helps you calculate that the sale price is $40 - (0.25 × $40) = x. x = $30.

  • Cooking: Adjusting a recipe for more or fewer servings involves proportions and ratios. For example, if a recipe calls for 2 cups of flour for 4 servings, how much do you need for 8 servings? Algebra helps you calculate that you’ll need 4 cups.
