What Is Algebra?
Understanding Variables, Algebraic Operations, Linear Equations & More
Algebra is like a puzzle. It’s a branch of mathematics where we use symbols, letters, and numbers to solve problems and figure out unknowns.
Have you ever been in math class and asked the question, "when will I ever use this in relal life?" Well in the case of Algebra, the answer, is all the time. There are many misconceptions about the use of Algebra in day to day life.
Budgeting: Balancing your income and expenses often involves creating equations. For example, let's say you earn $100 per week. After paying your bills, you only have $20 left to save each week. You’re saving up for a trip that costs $200. How many weeks will it take you to save enough money for the trip? We can say 20w=200,. Solve for w, 10 weeks!
Shopping: Figuring out discounts and sale prices requires solving percentage problems. For instance, if an item costs $40 and is on sale for 25% off, algebra helps you calculate that the sale price is $40 - (0.25 × $40) = x. x = $30.
Cooking: Adjusting a recipe for more or fewer servings involves proportions and ratios. For example, if a recipe calls for 2 cups of flour for 4 servings, how much do you need for 8 servings? Algebra helps you calculate that you’ll need 4 cups.
In which case you could be using this information for the rest of your life!
Video Game Designers: Creating graphics and simulations requires understanding coordinates, functions, and physics equations to make characters move realistically.
Engineers: Designing bridges, buildings, and machines involves using algebraic formulas to ensure structures are safe and functional.
Data Scientists: Solving problems with patterns and statistics relies on algebra to analyze data and make predictions, like identifying trends in social media or improving a product's performance.
